Lewis Hamilton is bidding to buy Chelsea FC, the club that Roman Abramovich has been an owner of since 2003. The Russian oligarch is subject to the sanctions that have been cast upon all those linked to Vladimir Putin.

The seven-time world champion would not be alone in the transaction. He is actually backing up former Liverpool FC chairman, Sir Martin Broughton, Sky News reports. The 23-time Grand Slam-winner Serena Williams rounds up the lineup of investors in their move to buy the Premier League football club. Lewis and Serena would be throwing in 10 million pounds each. A spokesperson for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas driver claims though, that the amount is “not accurate.”

The spearhead of the takeover, Sir Martin Broughton, has been in talks with the club for weeks already. Lewis Hamilton’s decision though, drops as a bomb in the industry, since he’s never made a secret of his support for the rival London club, Arsenal.

The UK government has put Chelsea FC up for sale following sanctions imposed on Roman Abramovich. The Russian oligarch has long left UK. The asking price for the club is around 2.5 million pounds. Therefore, Lewis Hamilton’s and Serena William’s contribution would be a drop in the ocean within the transaction.

Lewis Hamilton is busy racing this weekend in Imola

Lewis will be busy for the weekend. He will be competing in the Italian Grand Prix. The Mercedes driver is currently in the 5th position, 43 points short of the leading position. That belongs to Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.

Reigning champion Max Verstappen teased Hamilton about the Briton’s decision to bid for Chelsea FC. “I’m a PSV (Eindhoven) fan and I would never buy Ajax. And if I was going to buy a football club, I want to be the full owner and to take the decisions myself. Not own just a tiny percentage,” the Dutchman said, according to PlanetF1.com.
